Coffee exports rebound in the post-EPIDEMIC era of 2022

At the global level: Coffee exports recover during the pandemic

In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing. In 2020, the Novel Coronavirus pandemic caused incalculable damage to the global economy and health sector, affecting all industries. Of course, the global coffee market is not immune either. According to data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO), global coffee exports fell in 2019/20 from the previous year, to 127,36,000 bags in 2019/20 from 2018/19. In the pandemic era, coffee exports began to rebound in 2020/21, rising to 128.93 million bags.

Variety level: Arabica variety consumption increased steadily

In terms of varieties, Colombian arabica exports rose from 13.9 million bags in 2019/20 to 14.14 million bags in 2020/21; Arabica exports from other sources rose from 25.05 million bags in 2019/20 to 25.78 million bags in 2020/21; Arabica exports from Brazil rose to 41.96 million bags in 2020/21 from 39.71 million bags in 2019/20. Robusta (medium fruit coffee) exports fell from 48.7 million bags in 2019/20 to 47.04 million bags in 2020/21. Taken together, during the pandemic era, global demand for Arabica coffee has shown a steady increase, while consumption of robusta (medium fruit coffee) has declined.

Country level: Brazil is the world's largest coffee exporter

At the national level, Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia and Uganda are among the members of the National Coffee Organization. Among them, Brazil, as the largest exporter of coffee industry, exported 41.01 million bags of coffee in 2019/20 and then increased to 43.04 million bags in 2020/21. The proportion also increased from 33.2% in 2019/20 to 34.52% in 2020/21. It was followed by Vietnam, which exported 26.54 million bags of coffee in 2019/20 before falling to 24.56 million bags in 2020/21. The share also shrank from 21.49% in 2019/20 to 19.7% in 2020/21.
